The Merchant's House is a typical 17th/18th Century property, built from the profits of the river trade.

In the 19th Century it was a riverside inn known as "The King of Prussia".

George Millward, the head of the family in occupance in 1891 described himself as a publican/coal dealer. The coal trade was centred on the quay adjoining the property, he could work from home quite easily.
